So today on the way to work, I turn on the radio and dial in Planet Radio 93.3, where I usually listen to Bubba the Love Sponge. Today, I listened to 30 minutes of New Rock. I was sad. The free speech Gestapo got him.
I do not understand how people can complain about this stuff. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. If you don't want to go to porno sites on the web, don't go to one. Why should I and thousands of other listeners who enjoyed his show (even after the fines-- the "cleaned up version" so to speak) be deprived of this great show because some Southern Baptist asshat got his or her panties in a knot because they had STRIPPERS (*GASP*) in the studio! This is just not right.
I don't think I would really be what one would call a "fan", however I was one of those people who liked to listen because often times he had something insightful to say. I agreed with him on a lot of his political views. I enjoyed the song parodies and Ned always made me laugh (except for his prank calls, as someone who has to answer the phone, it pisses me off)..
America was founded on the priciples of freedom. I should be able to listen to Bubba the Love Sponge if I want to. I should be able to not listen to Bubba the Love Sponge if I do not want to. I should not be able to trample his freedom to do what he wishes over the radio. It's not like I can see what's really going on.
I flipped between 93.3 and Lex and Terry. L&T sucks. It was a bunch of redneck women sucking up to Lex and/or Terry. There was parts where there was very little said (or even dead air). There was obnoxious laughing. At stupid things.
So now I must, at least for a while, say goodbye to Bubba.
Posted by darkrose at February 24, 2004 10:23 AMWell, I'm not a fan. Didn't like him, didn't like what he said, so I just found something else to listen to. You're right. It's as easy as turning the dial. Frankly, it's not like the Planet played anything I like too often anyway. Same with L&T. I hate them, so I just don't listen. L&T whine too much. Bubba pretty talked shit about everyone, at least.
Posted by: xgrasshopperx at February 24, 2004 11:56 AMI honestly don't think that Bubba the Lovesponge is any sort of loss to the entertainment industry. Then again, I don't like to listen to the radio to hear people talk unless I'm tuned into NPR and I am actively seeking out people talking on the radio. I'll make a blanket statement and say that all of these 'shows' on the radio are pure crap, and as someone who knows that it takes little more than a trained monkey to run the equipment, I'm not surprised that they are.
Also... I agree with you about the free speech thing, but the FCC is god when it comes to the airwaves and ruling what is indecent or not. The FCC is both a blessing (do you want your kid listening to garbage on the radio or TV?) and a plague ( honestly, how bad is the occasional 'fuck' in a song going to curve the spine of listeners?).
My two cents.
